Since 1994 Renaissance Information Systems, Inc. has been serving the Vermont business and non-profit community through the development of customized software solutions. With over 50 years of combined experience, our staff are skilled in many of the latest technologies including Microsoft SQL Server and the Microsoft .Net frameworks (including Visual Basic, C++/C#, and ASP). In addition our experience extends to older technologies as well such as Microsoft Access, Paradox, Delphi, and FoxPro.

Carl Lorentson, Microsoft Certified Professional

At Renaissance Information Systems, Inc. Carl is the leader of a professional staff of programmers dedicated to using the latest technology to meet the growing needs of our clients. Since founding the company in 1994 he as worked with, or overseen projects for, over 75 clients from multinational firms to local non-profits to single-person entrepreneurs.

Prior to founding RIS, Carl spent 15 years developing custom applications for multiple industries including healthcare, banking, and agriculture. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from SUNY at Albany in 1979.

In his spare time Carl enjoys long-distance bicycling and spending time outdoors with his wife and two sons

UVM College of Medicine

In 2001 Luann Rolley of the UVM College of Medicine contacted RIS with a problem. The database she used to maintain critical data about the HIV+ patients seen by the 4 clinics around Vermont was getting too expensive. "...we had a beautiful, but very complex database system that required many hours of programmer time to update...The costs associated with these changes became prohibitive."

Luann had taken a database design class taught by RIS founder Carl Lorentson and knew there had to be a better way, and she was right. Tom Cooley, with RIS since 1998, worked with her to create a new database application that would respond to changes in the patient care world. "Federal requirements and new advances in the care of HIV+ patients necessitate frequent modifications to our database."

In December, 2003 the clinics changed the way they collected and organized lab results. Unfortunately the database was not configured to record information in a manner consistent with their new procedures. She called RIS and in just 15 minutes we had walked her through the process of developing a new questionnaire to collect the lab results separately from patient visits saving her hundreds if not thousands of dollars over the previous database.

This success story is just one of the many instances where the flexibility of a solution from RIS has paid for itself.
